Seo Mi-Kyung
Abstract
Based on the situational model, we propose that self-stigma don't necessarily cause a negative result despite public stigma is inevitable internalized as self-stigma. This study aims to examine the relationship between the self-stigma and self-esteem, to explore the moderate effects of the cognitive variables -perceived legitimacy of the discrimination, group identification- on those relationship. Data for this study were collected by 188 adults with mental illness who were involved in community based mental health services. This study provided important evidence: the self-stigma was very significant variable which caused negative impact on self-esteem of the person with mental illness. And cognitive variables had moderate effect on the relationship between self-stigma and self-esteem, especially when person with mental illness have a lower level of perceived legitimacy of the discrimination and a higher level of group identification, buffering the negative effects of self-stigma. In this context we propose the strategies to reduce the negative effects of self-stigma in the mental health field.
